This paper applies the CLEWs framework to analyze two transition scenarios in Ecuador: implementing NAMA-type agricultural practices in rice cultivation and progressive electrification of transportation. Results show that water management and efficient fertilization reduce methane emissions by over 60% compared to the baseline. The electric vehicle scenario increases electricity demand by about 15% by 2055, requiring expansion of generation technologies, but cumulative emissions also increase due to supplemental generation. Recommendations include diversifying renewable energy and promoting low-carbon agricultural practices.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Within the framework of the CLEWs approach, two transition scenarios for Ecuador were analyzed: 1) the implementation of a pilot plan for NAMA-type agricultural practices in rice cultivation and 2) the progressive electrification of transportation. The results showed that incorporating water management measures and efficient fertilization in rice paddies reduces methane emissions by more than 60% compared to the baseline, in addition to decreasing the need for expansion of rainfed crops. This demonstrates the potential of the agricultural sector to contribute to national climate mitigation goals and the efficient use of water and soil resources. On the other hand, the electric vehicle scenario showed an increase of approximately 15% in electricity demand by 2055, generating further expansion of generation technologies, mainly hydroelectric. However, cumulative emissions also increased due to the need for supplemental generation. Consequently, it is recommended to strengthen energy matrix diversification policies through non-conventional renewable energies, promote low-carbon agricultural practices, and develop integrated planning strategies under the CLEWs approach to ensure a resilient and sustainable energy transition.
