English

Using dynamic panel regressions on 121 countries, this study finds that higher carbon taxes and ETS prices significantly reduce CO2 emissions. A $10/ton increase in carbon tax reduces per capita emissions by 1.3% in the short run and 4.6% in the long run, controlling for macroeconomic factors.

In the global GX context

This paper provides robust ex-post evidence on carbon pricing effectiveness, relevant for global policy debates on carbon tax and ETS design. It supports the case for carbon pricing as a key tool in national climate strategies, including those under the Paris Agreement.

Provides rigorous empirical evidence on carbon pricing effectiveness using a large panel dataset, useful for meta-analyses and policy evaluation research.

Offers quantitative benchmarks (e.g., 4.6% long-run reduction per $10 tax) for corporate scenario analysis and carbon pricing assumptions.

Directly informs carbon pricing policy design and target setting, showing significant short- and long-run emission reductions from higher carbon prices.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract In this study, we provide ex post empirical analysis of the effects of climate policies on carbon emissions at the aggregate national level, using a comprehensive database of 121 countries. Carbon taxes and emissions trading systems (ETS), and the overall stringency of climate policies are considered. We use dynamic panel regressions, controlling for macroeconomic factors (economic development, GDP growth, urbanisation and the energy mix). Higher carbon taxes and ETS prices reduce carbon emissions. An increase in carbon taxes by $10 per ton of CO 2 reduces CO 2 emissions per capita by 1.3% in the short run and by 4.6% in the long run.
