📄 Abstract(原文)

In the European Union (EU), transportation is one of the few sectors that has increased its emissions compared to 1990 levels, with road transport accounting for 72% of total emissions in 2021. To address this issue, sustainable transport alternatives are emerging. These vehicles eliminate direct emissions during their operation, but they are more material intensive than conventional ones, materials that are also classified as Critical Raw Materials (CRM). This study evaluates the environmental, social, and cost impacts of the supply chain of CRM used in heavy-duty vehicles, to provide a Sustainability Assessment. Three types of vehicles are considered: Internal Combustion Engine (ICEV), Electric (EV) and Fuel Cell (FCV). The research is structured in four stages: First, an Inventory Assessment, which study the materials used in vehicles was developed to do a Criticality Assessment, to identify those with the highest criticality; using the GREET database and the SH2E methodology. Third, a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) is carried out to trace the origin and economic flows of these materials, using BACI database. The sustainability assessment is conducted using the Integrated EEMRIO methodology, with data from Ecoinvent and EXIOBASE which allows locating the impacts produced. Furthermore, impacts of the current supply chain (Baseline Scenario) were compared with impacts produced in a hypothetical supply chain in line with Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA Scenario). These scenarios were used to compare the total environmental impact of ICEV, EV and FCV. Finally, the cost of EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) of each material was calculated. Results showed that steel is the most abundant material in vehicles with 63%, 49% and 70% of weight of ICEV, EV, and FCV. By contrast, the most critical materials are platinum and natural rubber for ICEV, lithium for EV, and platinum and lithium for FCV, despite they are not the most abundant. MFA revealed that the EUs main supplier of platinum is South Africa, of lithium are Russia and China, and for natural rubber is the region of AFTA. Other critical points are intermediate countries between producers (Russia and United Kingdom) and Europe or China who concentrates most production of final products. Results of Sustainability Assessment show that platinum has the highest environmental impact, generating 138 kt of CO-eq per tonne, compared to 26.4 t for lithium and 4.4 t for rubber. This trend is the same for social and cost impacts. This is due to platinums low concentration in the Earths crust, requiring a much larger amount of ore to be processed. Other result is that the greatest environmental impacts occur during the supply chain (Scope 3*), rather than during production (Scope 1 and 2), with 85%, 80% and 46% of total impact in Scope 3* for platinum, lithium and rubber. In contrast, the distribution of social impacts varies depending on the material: for platinum, 99% are in Scope 3*, and for rubber, 81% are in Scope 3. The distribution of costs for platinum and rubber is spent in Scope 3* (98% and 62%), and for lithium in Scope 3 (59%). Additionally, all impacts in CRMA Scenario for platinum and rubber decrease (though rubber costs increase). This translates into a reduction of 13% and 7% in environmental impact of ICEV and FCV construction. However, lithium impacts due to not carrying out all production in the EU, so increase EV construction emissions grow in CRMA Scenario. Under the CRMA Scenario, the EU ETS costs for lithium and rubber are minimal, mainly from electricity used. In contrast, platinum faces a significant increase with 23,783 EUR in the Base Scenario and over 150,000 EUR in CRMA Scenario. Most costs come from road transport, expected to join the EU ETS in 2026. High costs could lead to carbon leakage, so to prevent this, platinum, lithium, and rubber, should be added to the CBAM to prevent high penalties.
