English

This paper proposes a three-pillar climate stabilization strategy integrating structural decarbonization, carbon dioxide removal (direct air capture, BECCS, enhanced weathering, large-scale ecosystem restoration), and active polar cooling — a geoengineering approach using high-energy-density systems on Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets to achieve net thermal extraction. The strategy aims to bridge the timescale gap between slow mitigation measures and urgent ice sheet tipping point risks.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper addresses a critical gap in global climate strategy by integrating slow mitigation with rapid intervention through polar cooling. It complements mainstream GX frameworks (e.g., TCFD, ISSB) that focus on disclosure and risk assessment, by proposing a direct physical intervention to avoid irreversible tipping points. The concept challenges current mitigation-only approaches and expands the debate on climate risk management.

Proposes a novel three-pillar strategy including polar geoengineering, relevant for climate modelers and risk analysts exploring mitigation alternatives.

Highlights the need for long-term planning for polar ice sheet stability; could inform international climate policy discussions on geoengineering governance.

📄 Abstract(原文)

No single mitigation approach is sufficient to address the multidimensional climate crisis. This paper proposes and analyses a three-pillar complementary strategy integrating: (1) structural decarbonisation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction; (2) carbon dioxide removal through direct air capture, BECCS, enhanced weathering, and large-scale ecosystem restoration including reforestation; and (3) active polar cooling — a geoengineering approach deploying high-energy-density systems centrally positioned on the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, with all generated energy allocated internally to cooling cycles, achieving net thermal extraction from the polar environment. The complementary strategy addresses the timescale gap between slow-acting structural measures and the urgent tipping point risk facing the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets.
