Trip chaining is a prevalent practice among consumers who choose self-pickup for their product fulfillment. The attractiveness of trip chaining is multifaceted, leading to reduced time and cost through fewer vehicle miles traveled, ease of navigation in congested travel corridors, and efficiencies gained through combining multiple location stops in a single shopping tour. Despite growing and intensifying environmental concerns, the trip chaining literature has made limited mention of the carbon footprint associated with trip chaining. In this chapter, we present an Excel-based probabilistic methodology for quantifying and comparing the carbon footprint of internal combustion engine and electric vehicles when used for trip chaining.
