English

This review explains hydrogen storage in synthetic and bioderived carbons through surface chemistry, defect landscapes, heteroatom doping, and metal-assisted spillover. It distinguishes physisorption, chemisorption, and spillover via thermodynamic and kinetic descriptors, showing that metal nanoparticle decoration and pore connectivity govern performance. Hierarchical micro-meso-macro architectures and operando characterization link structure to function, though scalable synthesis, nanoparticle durability, and reproducible defect control remain challenges.

📄 Abstract(原文)

High-capacity predictable hydrogen storage in synthetic and bioderived carbon is supported by active site engineering. This chapter describes how adsorption behavior results from the interaction between surface chemistry, defect landscapes, heteroatom doping, and metal-assisted spillover. We commence by delineating the classes of active sites and differentiating between physisorption, chemisorption, and spillover through the utilization of thermodynamic and kinetic descriptors that influence the strength of binding and the rates of release. In both synthetic and bioderived carbons, active site engineering enables reliable and large-capacity hydrogen storage. The decoration of metal nanoparticles adds extra dissociative sites, and the performance is determined by the stability of the catalyst and the connectivity of the pores. Lastly, hierarchical micro-meso-macro architectures and advanced operando characterization offer ways to connect structure and function. However, there are still issues with developing scalable synthesis methods for next-generation hydrogen-storage carbons, improving nanoparticle durability, and attaining reproducible defect management.
