A cradle-to-gate LCA of UAE cement production using GREET R&D, focusing on gas-fired kilns. The natural gas OPC baseline is 875.97 kg CO2eq/t. Electricity decarbonization cuts only 2-6%, while carbon capture delivers >30% reductions; a combined renewable electricity, alternative fuel, and CCS scenario reaches 512.18 kg CO2eq/t (41.6% below baseline). Multi-lever deployment, not single interventions, is required.

In the global GX context

Cement is a hard-to-abate sector central to ISSB/CSRD Scope 1 and process-emission disclosure. This regionally grounded, multi-lever LCA offers a reproducible framework for transition planning in energy-exporting economies and complements IEA pathway assessments.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Cement production is a major source of global greenhouse gas emissions and a hard-to-abate sector because of energy-intensive kiln operations and process emissions from limestone calcination. Decarbonizing the cement industry is critical to the United Arab Emirates' net-zero objectives amid growing construction demand. This study examines the cradle-to-gate life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with cement production in the UAE using GREET R&D. The focus is on gas-dominated kiln systems, a configuration underrepresented in existing literature dominated by coal-based production contexts. The functional unit is 1 ton of cement produced, with impacts evaluated using GWP metrics. A natural gas-based Ordinary Portland Cement pathway forms the baseline with emissions of 875.97 kg CO2 eq/t cement produced. A parametric approach isolates three mitigation levers: electricity transition, kiln fuel substitution (including renewable natural gas and alternative fuels), and post-combustion carbon capture, with combined scenarios considering increasing deployment complexity. Results indicate that electricity decarbonization reduces emissions by 2-6%, reflecting electricity's relatively small share of total cement emissions. Kiln fuel substitution shows variable performance, with most configurations providing marginal reductions. Carbon capture delivers the largest impact, achieving above 30% reductions when applied to combined process and combustion emissions, in line with International Energy Agency assessments of cement decarbonization pathways. A combined scenario integrating renewable electricity, alternative fuels, and carbon capture reduces emissions to 512.18 kg CO2 eq/t cement produced and a 41.6% reduction relative to baseline. Decarbonization of the sector, therefore, requires coordinated multi-lever deployment rather than a single intervention strategy. This study combines parametric and scenario-based analysis. The work delivers a reproducible, regionally grounded framework to support industrial decarbonization planning in energy-exporting, hard-to-abate sectors.
