📄 Abstract（原文）

This chapter provides an introduction to industrial and process energy efficiency. Industrial operations are large consumers of energy and emitters of GHG emissions. As introduced in Chapter 2 , industrial GHGs are about 24% of total GHGs globally, 24% in the U.S., and 37% in Canada. 1 If industrial indirect emissions are included such as from purchased electricity (Scope 2 emissions, see Chapter 2 ), then industry’s global share of GHGs is about 33% ( Rissman, 2024 ). 2 As also summarized in Chapter 2 , the science of climate change demonstrates that achieving net-zero GHGs globally is required to ultimately stabilize Earth’s climate as well as to meet many current policy goals. Therefore, given the industrial sector’s one-third contribution to global GHGs, it is clear that industrial efficiency and decarbonization are essential to achieving climate policy goals. Industrial operations are also critical for decarbonization of other economic sectors, because industrial GHG emissions represent the Scope 3 emissions that are reported by other sectors such as buildings and transportation.
