This study analyzes the association between green bond issuance and macro-financial indicators (renewable energy consumption, current account balance, inflation, investment, FDI) using panel data from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden for 2013-2024. Lagged fixed effects models show that an increase in green bonds is associated with higher renewable energy consumption, but no short-run causal effects are found.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Green bonds are becoming an important sustainable finance instrument for mobilizing capital towards climate transition, but their macro-financial role in advanced European economies remains insufficiently clarified. Despite the rapidly expanding literature on sustainable finance, limited evidence exists on whether green bond market development is systematically associated with broader macro-financial dynamics, including external balance, investment activity, foreign direct investment inflows, and renewable energy transition outcomes in advanced small open economies, particularly within the Scandinavian context. Unlike the predominantly project-level and market-specific evidence available in the literature, this study develops a macro-financial analytical framework that combines lagged panel correlations, bidirectional fixed effects modeling, and first-difference robustness testing to evaluate the medium-term financial transmission mechanisms associated with green bond market development in Scandinavian economies. The analysis is based on an unbalanced annual panel of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden for 2013–2024, covering 44 country-year observations. It applies pooled, within-country, and lagged correlations, bidirectional lagged fixed effects models, and first-difference robustness checks in R. The pooled correlation results show that green bond issuance is most strongly associated with inflation, with a Pearson correlation of 0.623. In contrast, its correlation with foreign direct investment inflows is positive and significant at 0.349. The corrected lagged within-country correlations indicate the strongest relationship with renewable energy consumption, with Pearson and Spearman coefficients of 0.815 and 0.803, respectively. The lagged fixed effects models show that a one-unit increase in lagged green bonds, measured in basis points of GDP, is associated with a 2.495 percentage-point increase in renewable energy consumption, as well as positive associations with current account balance, inflation, gross fixed capital formation, and foreign direct investment inflows. However, the first-difference lagged models show no statistically significant short-run effects, suggesting that green bonds and macro-financial indicators co-evolve over the medium term rather than producing immediate annual causal effects. The findings provide a foundation for future research on the macro-financial transmission channels of sustainable finance instruments and offer practical insights for policymakers, financial regulators, and market participants seeking to strengthen green capital markets, enhance investment mobilization, and support long-term financial and environmental sustainability.
