English

This master's thesis explores the role of procurement in maritime decarbonization. It identifies a lack of demand as a key barrier and examines whether procurement can generate demand for green technologies. Based on expert interviews, it concludes that procurement can act as a lever for decarbonization, but only conditionally, as it remains cost-focused and reactive rather than proactive.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This research contributes to global discussions on supply chain decarbonization, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like maritime. It highlights the role of procurement as a demand-side lever, complementing policy and technology push. Relevant for companies facing Scope 3 disclosure requirements and seeking to influence supplier behavior.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The maritime industry is the artery that holds together the global economy. With the vast majority of goods transported by sea. The industry is slow-moving, and re-sistant to fast change. As a result, maritime transport has lagged other industries in decarbonizing. Governments and NGOs alike have set environmental goals for the industry to follow, while this has created supply for goods, it has not created the de-mand necessary to adopt green technologies. Procurement can be a valuable lever in generating demand for green technologies, thus bridging the financial gap necessary for the industry to decarbonize. This masters’ thesis explores the challenges pertaining to decarbonization in the maritime industry, the feasibility of procurement as a lever for change, the success-ful utilization of tendering in past, and the future outlook in procurement for the maritime industry. The study was conducted via several semi-structured interviews with industry experts in procurement, sustainability, and the maritime industry. The findings suggested that procurement can act as lever for decarbonization, all be it conditionally. According to the research, procurement remains a cost focused function that reacts, rather than shapes transitions. While procurement can initiate change, it can only be done via benevolence and proper support from stakeholders under ideal market conditions.
