📄 Abstract(原文)
The 2030 ReFuelEU Aviation mandate will raise the required share of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the European aviation fuel mix from 2% to 6%, turning fuel decarbonisation into an increasingly important airline management challenge. This article examines what that shift could mean for airline economics, using Ryanair as a benchmark for the European low-cost airline model. While SAF production costs are expected to decline over time, considerable uncertainty remains around the future evolution of conventional fuel, non-synthetic SAF and synthetic SAF prices, meaning that compliance with the mandate could still create material additional costs for airlines. These costs may affect fares, margins, passenger demand, cash flow and the financial capacity available for fleet renewal and other transition investments. The implications will cut across commercial, finance, procurement, sustainability and revenue-management functions, requiring airlines to continuously reassess pricing decisions, cost assumptions and financial forecasts as fuel markets evolve. The article argues that the ability to manage SAF economics dynamically could become a differentiating capability, separating airlines that can actively shape the transition from those forced merely to react to it. Ultimately, the SAF transition will not be determined only in refineries, but also in airline boardrooms, commercial teams and revenue-management systems, where the financial and strategic consequences of fuel decarbonisation will ultimately be managed.
