Cradle-to-gate LCA of mortars with 10-30% OPC substitution by untreated, thermally activated, and pre-carbonated recycled concrete powder, normalized by 28-day compressive strength via a Strength-to-Impact Index. Untreated RCP at 30% gave the lowest endpoint burden, while 400°C activated RCP at 10% was most eco-efficient; carbonation curing reduced net eco-efficiency. Electricity supply dominated sensitivity.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The construction sector is envisaging to reduce CO 2 emissions from cement and concrete production while managing growing volumes of construction and demolition waste. Recycled concrete powder (RCP) has the potential to substitute Portland cement in concrete, but its environmental viability depends on activation intensity, substitution level, and system-level trade-offs. This study assessed performance-normalized eco-efficiency framework of mortar systems with 10-30% OPC substitution using untreated, thermally activated (400-800 °C) and pre-carbonated RCP, and carbonation-cured mortars though a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Environmental impacts were quantified using ReCiPe 2016 and normalised by compressive strength at industry accepted standard of characteristic 28-days to enable function-based comparison through the Strength to Impact Index (SII). OPC substitution reduced Endpoint impacts by up to 10.8%, with 30% untreated RCP achieving the lowest burden (13.903 mPt) and reducing climate-related Human Health damage by up to 17% for untreated RCP and up to 14.5% for 400 °C activated RCP at 30% replacement. The highest eco-efficiency (SII = 3.407 MPa/mPt) was observed at 10% substitution of 400 °C activated RCP, which outperformed higher-temperature activations. A Monte Carlo simulation on replacement ratio and carbonation efficiency indicated that, for the thermally activated and pre-carbonated route under the Malaysian grid, these two variables did not change the direction of the Endpoint advantage over OPC. Conversely, post carbonation curing resulted in a net decrease in eco-efficiency because curing-energy impacts outweighed performance gains. Sensitivity analyses identified electricity supply as the dominant source of variability. The findings provide a performance-based framework for eco-efficient screening of binder systems in sustainable concrete construction.
