English
Using 2,612 US firm-year observations (Refinitiv, 2019–2022) across five sectors, this study applies explainable ML (random forests, SHAP, partial dependence) to link financial health and ESG scores. Firm size is the most consistent predictor, while leverage, profitability, and investment vary by industry. Investment intensity does not uniformly improve ESG, suggesting ESG combines a scale component with sector-specific financial patterns.

In the global GX context
As ISSB/SSBJ disclosure and ESG ratings increasingly drive capital allocation, this paper shows that the financial drivers of ESG scores are sector-specific, cautioning against one-size-fits-all rating interpretation. It adds ML-based, explainable evidence to the global debate on ESG-financial performance links.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This study examines the relationship between firm-level financial health and ESG performance across five major U.S. sectors using 2612 firm-year observations from Refinitiv over 2019–2022. An explainable machine-learning framework combines random forests, regression-tree benchmarks, SHAP values, permutation importance, and partial dependence with firm-grouped and temporal validation. Firm size emerges as the most consistent predictor across sectors, while the relevance of leverage, profitability, and investment varies substantially by industry. Investment intensity is not uniformly associated with stronger ESG performance, highlighting the importance of sector-specific financial structures. Overall, ESG performance appears to combine a common scale-related component with heterogeneous sectoral financial patterns.
