📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This chapter contributes to global disclosure scholarship by critically assessing voluntary corporate climate commitments in logistics against TCFD/ISSB-aligned frameworks, highlighting Scope 3 accounting challenges and greenwashing risks that are central to CSRD and SEC climate disclosure debates. It underscores the need for stronger accountability mechanisms in transition finance and supply-chain decarbonization.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The chapter highlights the increasing role of private sector leadership in addressing climate action within the logistics space, including corporate climate commitments, environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure frameworks and supply chain decarbonisation approaches. Given that logistics activities represent a large and growing portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, the involvement of private companies, notably multinational logistics providers, has become critical in efforts to achieve global climate goals. The chapter contextualizes these developments within a growing array of hybrid climate governance, in which voluntary corporate actions are increasingly supplementing, and in some cases replacing, traditional regulatory measures. The analysis explores the evolution and scope of corporate climate commitments, highlighting the shift from corporate social responsibility to science-based and net-zero targets. It critiques the difficulties in tackling Scope 3 emissions, which constitute a large majority of the logistics sector’s carbon footprint and questions the credibility and accountability of corporate commitments with increasing concerns over greenwash and non-standardized reporting practices. The chapter covers how ESG frameworks help increase transparency and guide corporate behaviour, as well as the challenges of ESG frameworks in examining concrete business performance outcomes. It also explores other operational strategies like electrification, alternative fuels and digital optimisation in supply chain decarbonisation. The chapter assesses the success of corporate voluntary action, contending that though it raises awareness and leads to gradual progress, its overall effectiveness is frustrated by weak enforcement and irregular adoption. Developing economies were also a key focus, with institutional and structural challenges that slow implementation, coupled with opportunities to advance sustainable solutions. The chapter concludes that, in contrast to a piecemeal and corporate-centred approach of the private sector innovation role in climate action, more integrated approaches, coupled with effective frameworks for public policies and accountability systems, are essential if substantial emissions cuts in logistics are to be achieved.
