English
This chapter explores the potential of biochar beyond soil amendment, examining non-agricultural applications that can scale industrially or suit smallholder enterprises. It introduces the concept of 'carbon cascades', a circular economy model where biochar materials are used sequentially to maximize climate benefits. The work highlights how biochar can contribute to carbon removal and rural economic development.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The urgent need to address and reverse climate change, while restoring the chemical balance of both the atmosphere and the oceans, will profoundly shape the priorities and challenges of human civilization throughout the 21st century. Central to this effort is the identification and implementation of practical, scalable solutions for both reducing and removing greenhouse gas emissions. Much has already been written about the potential role of biochar as a soil amendment and for managing biomass waste. This chapter examines biochar formulations that may have many non-agricultural applications. We explore the full range of these novel uses, examine the potential of some to scale industrially and others to better suit smallholder enterprises, and consider how these may contribute to economic benefits in rural areas and the developing world. Rather than take a “cradle-to-grave” approach, this chapter explores “cradle to cradle,” or the circular and sequential economic models we call carbon cascades.
