English

PETRONAS Upstream developed an ISO 50001-aligned Energy Landscape Assessment to target combustion emissions, projected to exceed 50% of operational emissions by 2030. Focusing on turbomachinery (>95% of facility energy use), it deployed five gas turbine generator optimisation levers spanning operational, digital, and technology measures. Applying three levers across eight facilities delivered ~RM28 million/year in value and ~102,000 tCO2e/year reductions, offering a scalable, replicable decarbonisation model.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract As flaring and venting emissions continue to decline across the oil and gas industry, combustion emissions are emerging as the dominant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Within Upstream, combustion emissions are projected to contribute more than 50% of operational emissions by 2030, necessitating the need for combustion decarbonisation approaches that can reduce emissions without compromising production reliability and energy security. Recognising that turbomachinery systems account for over 95% of Upstream facility energy consumption, an in-house Energy Landscape Assessment (ELA) framework has been developed aligned with ISO 50001 principles to systematically identify energy efficiency and electrification opportunities across its asset portfolio. The assessment identified significant opportunities for Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) power optimisation across more than twenty (20) Upstream facilities, where generally GTG often run redundantly for reliability, operate inefficiently at low loads, increasing fuel use and emissions. This paper outlines PETRONAS's multi-pronged solutions to optimise GTG operations, enabling scalable decarbonisation, improving energy efficiency, and delivering significant OPEX savings through reduced GTG utilisation. The multi-pronged solution comprises five (5) scalable GTG Power Optimisation, namely Risk-Tolerant Approach, Load Shedding, Predictive Analytics, Power Integration, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The strategy combines operational, digital, and technology solutions ranging from zero-cost measures to CAPEX-intensive initiatives. Key solutions included transitioning facilities from conservative risk-averse operating philosophies toward quantified risk-tolerant approach, implementing load shedding to maintain power system resilience, integrating predictive analytics tool to provide earlier equipment failure warning, enabling inter- and intra-platform power sharing through power integration, and assessing BESS deployment as a future enabler to reduce spinning reserve and as back-up power. Implementation of three solutioning from Risk-Tolerant Approach, Load Shedding, and Power Integration—across eight (8) Upstream facilities (Facility A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H) successfully increased GTG loading closer to optimum operating efficiency while maintaining safe and reliable operations. The programme delivered realised value creation of approximately RM28 million per year through fuel gas savings and reduced OPEX maintenance expenditure, while achieving GHG reductions of approximately 102,000 tCO₂e per year. The results demonstrate that a facility-specific and calculated risk approach can unlock substantial environmental and economic benefits without major production impacts. While the other two-pronged CAPEX-based solutioning, namely Predictive Analytics and BESS are currently undergoing techno-commercial studies prior to project sanction for actual implementation. Overall, the multi-pronged solutions demonstrate a scalable and replicable decarbonisation model that provides a practical pathway in addressing hard-to-abate combustion emissions, supports long-term operational sustainability and contributes to the company's Net Zero Carbon Emissions aspiration by 2050.
