English
Using social network theory, this study builds iron and steel trade networks for 51 countries (2011–2022) and applies two-way fixed-effects models to test how network embeddedness affects carbon emissions. Greater embeddedness in total and product export networks reduces emissions via scale, technology, and structural effects, with middle- and low-income countries benefiting most. It reframes the trade–environment nexus around structural position rather than bilateral flows.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Iron and steel is a hard-to-abate sector central to CBAM, transition finance, and Scope 3 disclosure debates. By showing that a country's structural position in trade networks shapes emissions, the paper adds empirical evidence to global discussions on trade-climate policy coordination and embodied carbon accounting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
ABSTRACT Against the backdrop of the green transition of iron and steel (IS) sector, it is crucial to understand the structural characteristics of global trade networks, particularly how trade network embeddedness affects sectorial carbon emissions. This study first employs social network theory to construct the total, materials, and products trade networks of IS to analyze the dynamic evolution of overall and individual network characteristics. Second, drawing on the environmental triple‐effect theory, a two‐way fixed‐effects model is employed to examine how trade network embeddedness influences environment through scale, technology, and structure mechanisms. Finally, grounded in input‐output theory, we explore the relationship between network embeddedness and trade embodied carbon. Empirical findings from 51 member countries during 2011–2022 reveal that the IS trade networks exhibit pronounced diversification, distinct small‐world characteristics, and multipolar individual traits. This finding remains robust across a series of robustness tests. Second, increased embeddedness in both the total and products export networks facilitates carbon emission reductions. Third, total trade network embeddedness contributes to emission control through technical and structural effects, while embeddedness in the products trade network reduces emissions by scale, technical, and structural effects. Finally, further analysis finds no evidence that trade network embeddedness affects trade embodied carbon emissions, yet the heterogeneity analysis reveals that middle‐ and low‐income countries derive greater carbon reduction benefits from trade integration. This study shifts the focus from bilateral trade flows to the structural position of countries in complex trade system, expanding the analytical framework of the trade–environment nexus. It also provides valuable policy insights for coordinating trade policies with climate governance across nations.
