English

India's renewables reached ~288.6 GW (162.2 GW solar) by mid-2026, shifting the binding constraint from generation capacity to evacuation and flexibility. About 300 GWh was curtailed in Q1 2026 from transmission limits alone, with over 50 GW stranded or delayed. Lowering coal minimum loads, wide-area scheduling, better forecasting, storage and demand response each cut curtailment but none suffices alone; flexibility, transmission and system-service remuneration must be planned with capacity targets.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Adds a major emerging-market case to global transition scholarship: curtailment and flexibility adequacy, not capacity, become the binding constraint—directly relevant to ISSB/transition-finance debates on grid readiness and to investors assessing renewable asset stranding risk.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

India has become one of the fastest-growing solar and wind markets in the world: installed renewable capacity reached about 288.6 GW by 30 June 2026, of which solar alone was 162.2 GW. This growth is changing the way the grid must be planned and operated, because solar and wind are weather-dependent, geographically concentrated and connected through power electronics rather than synchronous machines. This review synthesises peer-reviewed studies, national planning documents and recent (2025–2026) market and system-operator evidence on the technical challenges of integrating variable renewable energy (VRE) into the Indian grid. Five themes are examined: forecasting and scheduling, transmission and geographic balancing, flexibility from thermal plants, hydro, storage and demand, grid stability and inverter control, and market design. The evidence shows that India’s binding constraint has shifted from generation capacity to evacuation and flexibility: roughly 300 GWh of renewable energy was curtailed in the first quarter of 2026 because of transmission limits alone, and more than 50 GW of renewable capacity is reported to be stranded or delayed. Modelling studies indicate that lowering coal minimum-load limits (70% to 40%), wide-area scheduling, better forecasting, storage, and demand response can each cut curtailment, but none is sufficient alone. A qualitative multi-criteria comparison, a four-phase integration roadmap and a set of research gaps are proposed. The review concludes that India can integrate high VRE shares reliably if flexibility adequacy, transmission readiness and market remuneration for system services are planned together with capacity targets.
