English
This paper evaluates six alternative energy vectors—BEVs, biofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, metal fuels, and synthetic fuels—for India's 2070 net-zero pathway. BEVs and E20 lead for passenger cars but face charging and mileage hurdles; green hydrogen and ammonia are most viable for heavy transport, shipping, and industry. Metal fuels and e-fuels show potential but remain costly and inefficient. The authors conclude a balanced, sector-specific mix is the realistic strategy.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Driven by rapid economic growth, massive crude oil imports, and rising climate risks, India urgently needs a clear strategy to transition away from fossil fuels. This paper examines six key energy alternatives—battery electric vehicles (BEVs), biofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, metal fuels, and synthetic fuels—to map out a realistic pathway toward India’s 2070 net-zero goals. While electric vehicles and ethanol blends (E20) are leading the shift for everyday passenger cars, they still face hurdles like sparse charging networks and lower fuel mileage. For heavy transport, shipping, and industry, green hydrogen and green ammonia offer the most viable long-term fix. Newer alternatives, such as metal fuels and synthetic e-fuels, hold strong potential due to high energy density and engine compatibility, but high costs and low efficiency currently limit them. Ultimately, no single fuel can solve the challenge on its own. India’s best way forward lies in a balanced strategy—matching each alternative to the specific sector where it works best.
