English

Using an optimization model that maximizes storage revenues in Greece's Day-Ahead and Balancing Markets, this paper analyzes how rising storage penetration and competition reduce balancing prices and accessible balancing energy. It then applies a Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR) assessment to evaluate storage investment viability under different price dynamics.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As global power systems integrate more renewables, storage economics and market design are central to the energy transition. This paper contributes empirical evidence from Greece's newly implemented storage market framework, offering a replicable MIRR-based methodology for assessing storage investment viability under competition—relevant to ISSB/transition-finance discussions on energy infrastructure.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Participation of energy storage systems in electricity markets is a rapidly growing research area, in response to increasing renewable energy penetration and evolving market designs. Greece has recently set in place the regulatory framework for storage participation in both the Day-Ahead and Balancing Markets. As interest in storage deployment increases, it is imperative for investors to be aware of the relevant potential revenues. This paper is based on the authors' optimization model which maximizes revenues from storage participation in the Day-Ahead and Balancing Markets, considering both capacity and energy products in upward and downward directions, in line with Greek market rules. Indicative results on past research from the authors highlight the role of the Balancing Market in storage-related investments, with a significant increase in annual revenues compared to participation only in DAM. However, such results have not considered the competition that will be introduced in case of increased storage installation in Greece. This paper considers the impact of increasing penetration of energy storage assets in market results, particularly with potential reductions in Balancing Market prices. Moreover, the paper examines a potential reduction in the amount of balancing energy that an examined storage asset will have access to due to increased competition. The resulting revenue streams are used to perform an economic assessment based on the Modified Internal Rate of Return (MIRR), enabling an evaluation of the economic viability of storage investments under different price dynamics.
