English

First process-level assessment of using non-condensable gas vents from thermal desalination (MSF/MED) as a CO₂ recovery feed. Aspen Plus models explicitly capture seawater carbonate chemistry, electrolyte thermodynamics, CO₂ release, air leakage and NCG extraction, benchmarked against reference plants. Thermal degassing releases 9–28% of feed DIC (173–193 g CO₂/m³ distillate in MSF, 30–70 g/m³ in MED, 2–3× with RO brine), yielding vents of 0.3–0.9 mol/mol CO₂. Desalination hubs can thus act as dual-purpose water–CO₂ facilities and, with permanent storage, a seawater-based carbon removal route.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Achieving climate neutrality requires carbon dioxide removal strategies capable of addressing dilute environmental carbon reservoirs, in addition to carbon capture from point sources. On the other hand, global water scarcity continues to drive the expansion of seawater desalination that continuously extract non-condensable gases (NCG), releasing part of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) as CO₂. This work assesses, for the first time at process level, the utilization of NCG vent of thermal desalination plants as a feed for CO₂ recovery. Aspen Plus models were developed for Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) and Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) desalination plants, explicitly including seawater carbonate chemistry, electrolyte thermodynamics, CO₂ release, air leakage and non-condensable gas extraction through simplified steam-ejector representations. Three feed compositions were considered: standard open-ocean seawater, high-salinity Arabian Gulf seawater and concentrated reverse-osmosis brine. The models were benchmarked against reference plants and literature works and used to assess the influence of temperature, number of stages/effects and feed composition on CO₂ recovery and NCG composition. CO₂ release was described with a non-equilibrium approach, i.e. the kinetics of bicarbonate and temperature-dependent stage degassing efficiency, validated against reference distillers. Thermal degassing releases 9–28% of the feed DIC, 173–193 g CO₂ per m³ of distillate in MSF and 30–70 g m⁻³ in MED with natural seawater, and two to three times more with RO brine; after water removal, the vent contains 0.3–0.9 mol mol⁻¹ CO₂. This work also presents preliminary economic results of integrated Carbon Capture plants demonstrating that thermal desalination hubs can therefore act as dual-purpose water–CO₂ facilities and, coupled with permanent storage, as a route for seawater-based carbon removal.
