English
This study assesses hydrogen production from waste plastics as a low-carbon pathway through an integrated socio-technical framework combining thermochemical conversion assessment and market acceptance survey (n=162). Results show acceptance is mainly driven by trust (β=0.47) and environmental perception (β=0.32), while price sensitivity has a negative effect (β=-0.21). The findings highlight that technological performance alone is insufficient; consumer perception and economic factors are equally important for low-carbon energy systems.

In the global GX context
This paper provides a socio-technical perspective on hydrogen from waste plastics, relevant to global efforts in circular economy and low-carbon hydrogen. The market acceptance model, emphasizing trust and environmental perception over awareness, offers insights for policymakers and project developers designing hydrogen deployment strategies.
👥 読者別の含意
🔬研究者:The integrated socio-technical framework and the relative importance of trust and environmental perception over awareness provide a model for studying other low-carbon technologies.
🏢実務担当者:For waste management or hydrogen production project developers, the findings underscore the need to build trust and communicate environmental benefits rather than relying solely on technical demonstrations.
🏛政策担当者:Policymakers should consider socio-economic factors beyond technology readiness; fostering trust and addressing price sensitivity are critical for public acceptance of hydrogen from waste.
📄 Abstract(原文)
Hydrogen production from waste plastics is emerging as a potential low-carbon pathway that integrates waste management with energy production. This study develops an integrated socio-technical framework combining a comparative assessment of thermochemical conversion pathways with market acceptance analysis based on survey data (n = 162). The results show that acceptance is mainly driven by trust (β = 0.47) and environmental perception (β = 0.32), while price sensitivity has a negative effect (β = −0.21). Awareness does not significantly affect acceptance (β = 0.08). The model explains 48% of the variance (R2 = 0.48), and a strong correlation is observed between trust and acceptance (r = 0.68). These results show that technological performance alone is insufficient; consumer perception and economic factors play an equally important role, highlighting the need for integrated socio-technical approaches in low-carbon energy systems.
