English

This study assesses digitalization's climate mitigation potential by constructing a digitalization index, estimating total factor energy productivity, and applying random forest, SHAP, DeepAR, and counterfactual simulations. It quantifies the digital rebound effect, showing that hidden carbon burdens limit digitalization's global mitigation potential. The repository provides analysis-ready data, code, and saved models for reproducibility.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As global disclosure frameworks (TCFD/ISSB/CSRD) increasingly require digitalization and energy data, this paper warns that digital rebound effects can offset mitigation gains, urging more rigorous accounting of ICT-related emissions in corporate climate strategies and transition finance.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This repository contains the analysis-ready data, code, saved models, and publication outputs supporting the article “The Hidden Carbon Burden of Digitalization: Rebound Effects Limit Its Global Climate Mitigation Potential.” The package covers the construction of the digitalization index, estimation of total factor energy productivity, random forest and SHAP analyses, quantification and characterization of the digital rebound effect, trajectory clustering, contribution decomposition, future scenario analysis, driver analysis, counterfactual simulations, and carbon-cost assessment. The materials are organized as numbered analysis modules. Each module provides the required inputs, analysis scripts, expected outputs, and instructions for execution. All executable workflows use relative paths and do not require access to the authors’ original working directories. Saved DeepAR models are included and can be used directly for inference without retraining. A variable dictionary, software environment files, file inventory, and SHA-256 checksums are also provided.
