Presents design and verification methodology for an integrated pilot combining magnesium recovery from reverse-osmosis brine, CO2 mineralization, and reverse electrodialysis (RED) for power generation. Reports repeatable carbonate formation with >95% purity target, but notes incomplete data package and emphasizes need to reconcile mineralogy, moisture basis, gas analysis, auxiliary electricity, and chemical consumption before scale-up.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Industrial reverse-osmosis systems produce a concentrated brine stream that is normally managed as a disposal liability, even though it contains recoverable magnesium and a salinity gradient that can be converted to electrical energy. This paper presents the design and verification methodology for an integrated pilot at EMSTEEL's steelworks that combines alkaline magnesium recovery, carbon-dioxide mineralization, and reverse electrodialysis (RED). The mineral-recovery train is based on approximately 30 t/d of brine. Magnesium is first precipitated as Mg(OH)2, then carbonated under controlled pH, temperature, gas flow, and mixing conditions to form a magnesium- carbonate product, followed by dewatering and drying. In parallel, RED modules use high- and low-salinity streams to generate direct- current power and condition the discharge stream and support brine dilution and discharge condition. The pilot programme evaluates magnesium recovery, product phase and purity, specific reagent consumption, direct CO2 uptake, discharge total dissolved solids, gross and net electrical output, RED voltage, current, and power-generation performance, and long-duration operability. A short project results summary reports repeatable carbonate formation and product purity targetted greater than 95%; however, complete laboratory certificates, continuous operating records, and RED power traces were not included in the available data package. Accordingly, this manuscript distinguishes reported preliminary observations from design targets. The underlying project documents cite alternative projected product rates of 0.25 to 0.395 t/d, a monitored Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O value of 0.390 t/d, a gross-energy estimate of 144 kWh/d for three RED stacks, and an projected annual CO2 benefit of 82 t/y. These differences demonstrate why product mineralogy, moisture basis, gas analysis, auxiliary electricity, and chemical consumption must be reconciled before scale-up. The pilot provides a practical framework for converting brine management from a single-purpose disposal activity into a measurable circular process, while preserving clear technical boundaries between gross resource recovery and verified net environmental benefit.
