English

This study analyzes solar energy adoption in the Himalayan region of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, using primary survey data and government records. Rooftop installations dominate, driven by government subsidies post-2023, while ground-mounted systems face land and investment barriers. Challenges include maintenance issues, subsidy delays, and skilled labor shortages. The findings highlight the potential for energy access and employment through better policy implementation.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The transition towards renewable energy has significantly increased the adoption of solar power in recent years, particularly in geographically diverse regions. This study examines the existing scenario of solar energy installations in Pauri Garhwal, based on both primary and secondary data collected through a structured field survey (conducted between April 2025 to March 2026) and state government portals. A total of 60 groundmounted (GM) and 1,746 rooftop (RT) solar plants were analysed to understand their spatial distribution, temporal growth, subsidy patterns and technological characteristics. The results indicate a clear dominance of rooftop solar installations, with a rapid increase observed after 2023, largely influenced by government subsidy schemes and ease of installation. In contrast GM systems remain limited due to factors such as land constraints, higher investment requirements and lack of awareness regarding their economic potential. The study also identifies several challenges, including maintenance-related issues, dependency on vendors, delays in subsidy disbursement, and shortage of skilled manpower for large-scale systems. Despite these constraints, solar energy has shown strong potential in improving energy access and generating local employment. The findings highlight the need for better awareness, technical support, and efficient policy implementation to ensure sustainable solar energy adoption in the region.
