English

A PETRONAS LNG facility replaces gas turbine generators with a 275kV EHV grid connection (up to 90 MW) drawing grid-based renewable power, cutting fuel gas combustion, GHG emissions and carbon intensity to accelerate net-zero goals. The project integrates EHV substations, protection relays and ENMCS from design through commissioning, achieving zero-downtime load transfer and stability validation. A risk-based commissioning approach with SSP/ORA frameworks ensures operational readiness and safe transition.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract This project is a strategic initiative advancing the Company's energy transition agenda by decarbonising power supply to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities through integration with grid‑based renewable energy. By replacing conventional Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) with a 275kV Extra High Voltage (EHV) grid connection delivering up to 90 MW, the project directly accelerates Net‑Zero Carbon (NZC) ambitions through significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and carbon intensity produced by the conventional Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) by reduced direct combustion of fuel gas and reduce GHG emissions (CO2e) from the combustion in PLANT which generates a GHG index of 0.916 tCO2e/MWh. Beyond emissions reduction, it delivers substantial operational and economic value through optimized fuel gas utilisation, reduced reliance on carbon‑intensive generation, and enhanced energy efficiency. The transition strengthens system reliability and resilience via diversified power sources, while enabling a seamless and sustainable conversion within a brownfield environment—positioning the facility as a benchmark low‑carbon LNG operation. The project adopts an integrated power system engineering approach covering engineering design, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of 275 kV EHV substations and its utilities, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and Energy Network Management Control Systems (ENMCS). Key processes include integration with existing facilities, grid‑plant synchronization, protection coordination, dynamic load transfer, and stability validation under multiple operating scenarios. Execution is anchored on a risk‑based commissioning methodology, strengthened by the Smooth Start‑Up Program (SSP) and Operations Readiness Assurance (ORA) framework to ensure disciplined sequencing, operational readiness, and safe transition. Digital monitoring, real‑time control, and advanced simulations further optimize system performance, enhance energy efficiency, and minimize emissions, aligning execution with Net Zero Carbon (NZC) and sustainability objectives. The project delivers significant environmental, operational, and strategic impact. Through systematic displacement of few gas‑based generation with imported grid power, implemented via controlled synchronization and phased load ramp‑up, it achieves substantial reductions in fuel gas consumption, flaring, and reduce CO2 emissions. This transition lowers overall carbon intensity while improving energy efficiency and stability of operations. Operationally, it enhances reliability, optimizes fuel gas utilisation for higher‑value use, and improves energy resilience. The integration of Smooth Start Up Programme (SSP) and Operation Readiness Assurance (ORA) ensures controlled energization, minimizes inefficiencies, and enables a seamless transition without disruption, delivering consistent, low‑emission performance. The project establishes a benchmark for grid electrification in brownfield LNG facilities whereby conventional downstream plant is using Gas Turbine Generator for providing electricity. Its novelty lies in combining advanced EHV engineering, digital control systems, and commissioning‑led execution within a live operating plant and smooth load transfer without interrupting plant operation. Key differentiators include early interface alignment, strong technical assurance governance, and zero‑downtime integration. It demonstrates how disciplined electrification and execution can accelerate sustainable energy transition while maintaining operational integrity, reliability, and long‑term low‑carbon performance.
