English

This study applies LCA to a commercial nursery replacing diesel heating with PV-supported electric heating for greenhouse tomato seedlings. Diesel was the dominant hotspot at 52.3% of the carbon footprint; a same-period counterfactual cut emissions by 44.8% (2.47×10⁻² to 1.36×10⁻² kg CO2eq per seedling). PV electricity raised mineral and metal resource use, revealing trade-offs. Operational second-period results (~49% lower) are reported as complementary, not isolated, evidence.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Greenhouse production can require substantial heating energy, causing significant environmental impacts when fossil fuels are used. This study combined Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), engineering sizing, and post-implementation assessment to investigate the replacement of diesel-based heating with photovoltaic-supported electric heating in a commercial nursery. A baseline LCA using data from the first cultivation period identified diesel heating as the main hotspot, accounting for 52.3% of the carbon footprint. A same-period counterfactual scenario maintained all non-heating inventory flows unchanged, while replacing the useful heating service from 3500 L of diesel with 22,409 kWh of electricity modelled using a PV-electricity dataset. The carbon footprint decreased from 2.47 × 10−2 to 1.36 × 10−2 kg CO2 eq per seedling. Fossil-related impacts also decreased, although photovoltaic electricity increased mineral and metal resource use and selected upstream impacts. The engineering assessment estimated 26.4 kW heating capacity and 7918 kWh seasonal electricity consumption. In practice, a 10 kW electric fan heater was installed and consumed 4141 kWh during the second cultivation period. Under the same-period controlled comparison, replacement of diesel heating with PV-supported electric heating reduced the carbon footprint by 44.8%. The operational LCA of the second cultivation period yielded 1.25 × 10−2 kg CO2 eq per seedling, approximately 49% lower than the first-period value. Because production output and other inventory inputs also differed between periods, this interannual change is reported as a complementary operational observation rather than as the isolated effect of the heating-system transition. The study provides case-specific evidence on the environmental benefits, trade-offs, and operational implications of replacing diesel-based heating with PV-supported electric heating in a commercial greenhouse nursery.
