English

This data descriptor harmonises EU fleet economic data with spatially resolved fishing effort and landings to produce four gridded datasets of fuel consumption, fuel costs, and energy performance indicators for Mediterranean and Black Sea trawl fisheries (2013–2022). Indicators include fuel use intensity and fuel efficiency at 0.5° c-square resolution, validated against AIS-derived fuel reconstruction.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Spatially explicit information on fuel consumption and energy efficiency is essential for evaluating the climate-related and economic performance of trawl fisheries, yet such data are rarely available at regional scales. This Data Descriptor presents four harmonised spatial datasets describing fuel consumption, fuel costs, and energy-related performance indicators for Mediterranean and Black Sea trawl fisheries during 2013 to 2022. The datasets integrate fleet-segment economic data from the EU Annual Economic Report with spatially resolved fishing effort and landings from the Fisheries Dependent Information database, using a reproducible framework that allocates fleet-segment fuel consumption and costs to spatial fishing grounds according to the distribution of fishing effort and landings. Indicators include Energy Consumption, Energy Costs, Fuel Use Intensity, Energy Use Intensity, and Fuel Efficiency, reported on a 0.5° c-square grid. The four products provide energy indicators at increasing levels of aggregation, ranging from datasets disaggregated by fishing technique, gear type, and vessel length to datasets summarised across all trawl fleet segments within each c-square grid. Spatial patterns of energy consumption were independently validated using Automatic Identification System data combined with empirically derived fuel-consumption relationships to reconstruct fuel use. These datasets provide a consistent spatial representation of energy use to support spatial analyses, modelling applications, and assessments of energy efficiency and decarbonisation strategies.
