English

This study analyzes how the EU ETS influenced electricity generation composition from 1990 to 2023 using a Difference-in-Differences framework. It examines baseline treatment effects and exploits heterogeneity in carbon intensity to show how carbon pricing interacts with national energy structures, using updated data through Phase IV.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

日本の炭素価格制度(GXリーグ・排出量取引)設計において、EU ETSの実証結果は示唆に富む。特に電源構成の変化に着目した分析は、日本でもフェーズ移行時の政策評価に活用可能。

In the global GX context

This empirical paper provides robust evidence on how carbon pricing drives structural change in electricity markets, directly relevant to global carbon pricing debates and the design of effective emissions trading systems. It offers lessons for jurisdictions like the US and Japan considering similar policies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Carbon pricing is a central instrument of European climate policy, yet its effects on structural changes in electricity generation remain an open empirical question. This thesis investigates how the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has influenced the composition of electricity production across European countries between 1990 and 2023. Using a Difference-in-Differences framework, the analysis first evaluates baseline treatment effects and the plausibility of the parallel trends assumption. It then extends the empirical approach by exploiting heterogeneity in baseline carbon intensity to examine differential exposure to a common carbon price signal. By incorporating updated data covering Phase IV of the EU ETS and emphasizing cross-country differences in initial electricity system characteristics, the thesis contributes to understanding how carbon pricing interacts with national energy structures and shapes adjustment dynamics within the European energy transition.
