An ambient-cured geopolymer concrete (70% fly ash, 30% slag) was tested for M30 structural grade, achieving 34.23 MPa at 28 days versus 31.53 MPa for Portland cement control. Embodied carbon dropped 57% (385.6 to 165.8 kg/m³), with activators contributing 88.9% of emissions. Cost was 22% higher at lab chemical prices but 17% lower at bulk prices, so benefits hinge on activator sourcing and carbon accounting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Background: Portland cement production releases large quantities of carbon dioxide through limestone calcination and fuel combustion, and geopolymer concrete made from industrial by-products is a candidate replacement; however, most mix designs depend on heat curing, which is impractical for cast-in-situ work. Methods: A 30 MPa grade geopolymer concrete was proportioned by a density-based method using 70% Class F fly ash and 30% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, activated by 12 molar sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate at a silicate-to-hydroxide ratio of 2.5 and an activator-to-binder ratio of 0.45, and cured at 27 ± 2 °C without heat or water. A water-cured Portland cement concrete served as control. Slump and cube compressive strength at 7, 14 and 28 days (three cubes per age) were measured, followed by Welch tests, two-way analysis of variance, log-age regression, a material cost inventory and a cradle-to-gate carbon inventory with sensitivity analysis. Results: The geopolymer mix reached 34.23 ± 0.47 MPa at 28 days against 31.53 ± 0.45 MPa for the control (difference 2.70 MPa, p = 0.002), with lower slump (85 versus 105 mm). Embodied carbon fell from 385.6 to 165.8 kg per cubic metre (57.0%), of which the activators contributed 88.9%. Material cost was 22.0% higher at laboratory chemical prices and 17.0% lower at bulk prices. Conclusions: Ambient-cured fly ash–slag geopolymer concrete met the 30 MPa characteristic level with less than half the embodied carbon of the control, but its cost and carbon advantages depend mainly on activator sourcing and accounting.
