English

This case study analyzes the carbon dimension of upcycling post-production oak offcuts into furniture using carbon footprint and circular economy framing. Each product retains roughly 108–225 kg CO₂ for its service life and avoids emissions from harvesting primary timber. Results support upcycling as beneficial for both enterprise and climate goals, with cradle-to-gate LCA as the next step.

In the global GX context

Amid ISSB/CSRD debates on biogenic carbon and product-level footprinting, this case offers a concrete method for quantifying retained carbon in upcycled goods, informing how companies can evidence circular-economy claims in climate disclosure and avoid greenwashing risk.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Carbon Footprint and Retained Carbon in Furniture Made from Upcycled Post-Production Wood Residues: A Case Study. This article examines the carbon dimension of upcycling post-production wood residues into furniture, using the carbon footprint and the principles of the circular economy as the analytical frame. It sets out how the footprint of a wood product is built up across sourcing, processing, and use, and why the route taken by wood waste, whether it is recycled, upcycled, recovered for energy, or landfilled, changes that footprint. It then places upcycling within the circular economy and the European policy framework, where keeping materials at their highest value for as long as possible is the central aim. Finally, it estimates the carbon retained in a catalogue of products made from oak offcuts. Expressed as carbon held in the finished furniture, a single product keeps on the order of 108 to 225 kg of CO₂ out of the atmosphere for its service life, and the use of waste feedstock avoids the emissions associated with harvesting and processing primary timber. These results support the proposition that the upcycling methodology examined here is beneficial not only for the enterprise but also for climate goals, and they identify a cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment as the natural next step.
