In the global GX context
With aviation decarbonization targets tightening globally (e.g., ICAO CORSIA, EU ReFuelEU), this chapter provides a critical overview of SAF sustainability metrics and certification. Its discussion of trade-offs between GHG reductions and other environmental impacts informs both policymakers and fuel producers in designing robust frameworks.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The recent boost for producing and using alternative jet fuels (AJFs) – or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) considering specific criteria – is essentially supported by the ambitious decarbonisation targets of the aviation sector. In addition to economic and technological obstacles for scaling-up a new supply-chain, methodological issues, especially environmental and social aspects, can be a challenge. “What” must be measured and “how” to do it are strategic issues for decision making. The first sustainability criteria for SAF were based on greenhouse gases (GHGs) accounting along the SAF life cycle and the land use. Other criteria must be considered aiming to promote an effective and sustainable energy transition in the aviation sector. This chapter is divided into four sections. The first explores the GHG reduction potential of alternative jet fuels in different methodologies, including possible trade-offs with other environmental impact categories. The second and third sections present a general overview of the sustainability risks related to SAF production and the current certification schemes associated with SAF production. Finally, the last section briefly explores two initiatives for using spatially explicit tools in environmental analysis.
