English
This dissertation examines whether ESG disclosures channel private capital to green investment in the EU. Using Eurosystem holdings data (2014-2022), it finds investors prefer domestic green bonds once available, and ESG disclosures do not structurally attract foreign investors. A systematic review suggests cautious optimism: disclosures may improve funding conditions, but outcomes depend on institutions and regulatory design.

In the global GX context
This paper provides empirical evidence on the limits of ESG disclosure in driving cross-border green capital, directly relevant to ISSB/CSRD implementation debates. It cautions that disclosure alone may not overcome home bias, informing the design of transition finance policies and disclosure infrastructure.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Can environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures help channel private capital towards green investment in the European Union and improve funding conditions for green firms, including across borders? This dissertation addresses these questions through three studies. The first two examine euro area green bond markets, an important source of sustainable finance alongside bank intermediation. Using confidential Eurosystem data on investors’ holdings from 2014 to 2022, they show that investors are willing to hold foreign green bonds but prefer domestic bonds once these become available. More fundamentally, the findings suggest that information alone does not overcome investors’ preference for domestic assets: knowledge and experience gained in foreign green bond markets may not translate into sustained cross-border investment. The studies also find no evidence that firms’ ESG disclosures help attract structurally more foreign investors to their green bonds. The third study broadens the analysis through a systematic review of evidence across European financial systems. It offers cautious optimism: ESG disclosures may support access to capital and favourable funding conditions, although outcomes vary with national institutions, firm characteristics and regulatory design. Together, the findings highlight both the potential and limitations of EU sustainable finance legislation in supporting the transition to a sustainable economy.
