English

Using China's carbon emissions trading pilot as a quasi-natural experiment with PSM-DID, this study examines effects on firm employment dynamics. Carbon trading simultaneously raises both job creation and destruction, yet net employment grows through their coupling. Scale and low-carbon innovation effects are key channels, with employment shifting from low- to high-productivity firms.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract Based on the quasi-natural experiment of China’s carbon emissions trading pilot, the PSM-DID method was used in this study to investigate the impact of carbon emissions trading on firm employment dynamics and its underlying mechanisms. The findings show that carbon emissions trading simultaneously increases the employment creation and destruction rates of Chinese firms and, under the coupling effect of the two, promotes net employment growth. Mechanism tests reveal that the scale effect and low-carbon technological innovation effect are important channels through which carbon emissions trading influences firm employment dynamics, while inter-factor substitution and the complementarity effect do not play a role. A heterogeneity analysis shows that the promotion effect of carbon emissions trading on net employment growth is significant for firms’ technical and managerial personnel, state-owned enterprises, and firms in highly liquid carbon markets. Further, carbon emissions trading triggers dynamic employment adjustments based on productivity differences, leading to employment destruction in low-productivity firms and employment creation and net employment growth in high-productivity firms.
