📄 Abstract(原文)
Local government is in a unique position to carry out focused initiatives that improve resilience and advance sustainability since it is situated at the forefront of the effects of climate change. In this chapter, the importance of local governments as environmental stewards in handling climate change by implementing mitigation and adaptation plans is examined. The exposition commences with a brief overview of the nature of the climate change debate among scientists. The effects of climate change in urban and rural areas, to accentuate the need for suitable localized action in response to growing climate hazards such as environmental deterioration and harsh weather, are highlighted. Creative initiatives taken by cities around the globe to mitigate the negative effects of climate change are explained. Emission reductions, waste management, energy efficiency, and the promotion of renewable energy are some of the main mitigating strategies investigated. These initiatives illustrate the need for an integrated approach that links local development, urban resilience, and sustainability. In the chapter, the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure, such as green spaces and the creation of “cool islands,” is also highlighted. Lastly, the chapter provides a brief exposition of effective climate governance in the local spheres of government by accentuating the significance of strong political, administrative, and community leadership; public partnerships; and disaster preparedness capacity.
