Nigeria, endowed with abundant renewable and non-renewable energy resources, faces significant challenges in meeting its energy demands, with less than 60% of its population having access to electricity. Hydrogen, as a versatile and clean energy carrier, presents a transformative opportunity to address energy poverty, enhance energy security, and support Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy. This review assesses the potential for hydrogen utilization in Nigeria’s energy sector, focusing on production methods, applications in transportation and power sectors, policy frameworks, and associated challenges. By integrating renewable energy sources and advanced technologies like Power-to-X (PtX), Nigeria could leverage hydrogen to achieve sustainable development goals. However, economic, technical, and infrastructural barriers must be addressed to realize this potential.
