English

CLIOx is a compact low-inertia oxy-combustion power platform integrating ASU, power block, and CO2 compression/purification to cut CAPEX. Aspen Plus simulations show a net efficiency of 38.64% (including ASU and CPU duties) at 740°C HP turbine inlet and 300 bar. Its low thermal inertia enables flexible, dispatchable firm power that balances renewable intermittency, targeting the decarbonization gap in peaking/open-cycle gas turbines.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Oxy-combustion with carbon-capture is a promising pathway towards carbon neutrality from a socio-economic point of view, as the fuels are abundantly available. However, from a technical point of view, burning fuels with pure oxygen generates high flame temperatures, requiring both effective moderation and expensive high-temperature materials. These limitations often compromise the cost-competitiveness of oxy-combustion systems. In addition, highly efficient power cycles typically include combined cycle architecture, which exhibits high thermal inertia, restricting their operational flexibility. An optimal integration of the main process blocks: Air Separation Unit (ASU), power block, and CO2 Compression and Purification Unit (CPU), remains an open challenge. To date, few cycles have been demonstrated that simultaneously maximize efficiency, minimize complexity, and reduce the number of components. The proposed CLIOx (Compact Low Inertia Oxy-combustion) power platform introduces an oxy-combustion platform that enables a novel integration of ASU, power block, and CPU while minimizing the CAPEX. In the simplified set-up, the focus will be on identifying the fully decarbonised cycle efficiencies from the main cycle. The cycle employs two turbines with intermediate reheat and a recovery system that preheats the moderating agent (water). This results in a predominant water-steam working fluid. Thermodynamic simulations performed in Aspen Plus evaluate the influence of pressure and temperature levels on overall performance, highlighting pathways for technological improvement. With a HP turbine inlet temperature limited to 740 °C, a high-pressure level of 300 bar, and an IP turbine inlet temperature below 1350 °C, the simplified CLIOx power platform gives perspective on achieving a final net efficiency of 38.64%, including all ASU and CPU duties. The reduced thermal inertia enables flexible and cold start dispatchable operation, making the system suitable as a thermal asset to support a renewable asset maximization. Depending on site-specific conditions, cycle adaptations can allow heat extraction for combined heat, cold and power (CHP) applications. While conventional decarbonization solutions are primarily optimized for combined cycle gas turbine operating in base- or mid-load regimes, the CLIOx power platform is specifically engineered to address the critical need for decarbonizing open cycle gas turbines. Unlike heavy-duty combined cycles, CLIOx provides a carbon-free alternative that preserves the high operational flexibility and instant dispatchability required for peaking plants. By filling this gap, CLIOx offers a technical solution for “firm power” that can rapidly balance the intermittency of renewable energy sources without the thermal inertia or chemical complexity associated with traditional capture retrofits. The CLIOx power platform offers an efficient and flexible oxy-combustion concept capable of delivering clean power with integrated CO2 capture at low investment costs. Its adaptability for power and heat generation positions it as a competitive option to accelerate the transition towards carbon-neutral energy systems.
