English

This study examines engineering design strategies to mitigate climate change impacts on affordable housing in The Bahamas, using mixed-method interviews with construction professionals. Strategies like preserving natural coastal protection and bolstering infrastructure were prioritized, aligning with LEED V4. Climate resilience and housing integrity were highlighted, while affordability and sustainability received lower ratings. Public-private partnerships and regulation enforcement were advocated.

In the global GX context

Globally, this paper contributes to climate adaptation literature, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). It highlights the role of engineering design in reducing climate vulnerability, aligning with international frameworks like LEED and the Sendai Framework. The findings inform policy on resilient housing and infrastructure, relevant to global discussions on climate-resilient development.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Climate change has led to a rapid increase in hurricanes, a trend which is likely to continue, especially for Small Islands. In The Bahamas, hurricanes like Dorian, are estimated to have rendered $3.4 billion Bahama Dollars (B) in losses. This is equivalent to 25% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with adverse impact noted particularly for affordable housing stocks. However, the extent to which engineering design strategies can mitigate these impacts has not been thoroughly examined in the context of The Bahamas. Using a mixed-method approach, the study combined qualitative and quantitative stakeholder interviews with construction professionals to explore how to improve outcomes through engineering design strategies. The strategies ranked highly included preserving natural coastline protection systems and bolstering infrastructure, which aligns with international certification schemes such as LEED V4. The respondents highlighted climate resilience and improved housing integrity as priority areas. Comparatively, lower than expected ratings were received for affordability and sustainability. Meanwhile, interviewees affirmed the ratings and advocated for public-private partnerships and regulations enforcement. Critically, these findings could influence fundamental improvements in home design, construction methods, and public policy, ultimately, forming the basis for future research in this area.
