Using ~23,000 Flash Eurobarometer respondents across EU countries, the study analyzes determinants of attitudes toward and willingness to adopt renewable energy during the energy crisis. Logistic regression combined with classification trees and random forests identifies price and socioeconomic effects. It finds a significant attitude–behaviour gap (and inverse gap for some cohorts) and recommends targeted support for high-price/high-demand regions and cohorts such as the elderly and job seekers.

In the global GX context
Amid the EU energy crisis, this paper quantifies the attitude–behaviour gap in RE adoption, offering evidence relevant to EU energy policy design and to global debates on just transition and affordability—useful for disclosure scholars examining social dimensions of transition planning.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The paper examines the factors affecting individuals' attitudes towards renewable energy (RE) and their willingness to adopt it. It particularly explores the consequences of changes in energy prices during the EU energy crisis. The study considers both socioeconomic and financial factors as well as non-economic factors. Based on the existing research, this study offers novel empirical insights into the economic aspects and decision-making related to RE usage. The analysis uses micro-level data from the Flash Eurobarometer, with approximately 23,000 respondents across EU countries. To ensure robust results, a combination of statistical and machine learning methods is employed. Classification trees and random forests complement logistic regression results by exploring interconnections in people's attitudes and predicting potential actions. Our results allow us to make recommendations for EU energy policy. We highlighted the effects of energy prices and socio-economic factors on households' decision to adopt RE. Our results suggest the existence of a significant Attitude-Behaviour gap as well as an inverse Attitude-Behaviour gap for some cohorts. Policies to support the adoption of RE should address the identified differences and include tools to reduce costs and support regions with high energy prices and high energy demand, as well as certain cohorts, such as the elderly population and job seekers.
