Rice fields are a significant source of methane (CH4) due to the anaerobic conditions of continuous flooding, making them both a climate challenge and an opportunity for mitigation. Carbon farming is a set of agricultural management practices aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and/or increasing carbon sequestration. It has emerged as a key instrument within European climate policy. However, the implementation of carbon farming schemes at the territorial level remains difficult due to structural, institutional, and socioeconomic barriers, which limit farmers’ adoption and compromise the credibility of voluntary carbon markets. This thesis analyses the conditions, barriers, and incentives for implementing carbon farming projects in Mediterranean rice fields, using the Ebro Delta (Catalonia, Spain) as a case study. The research applies a mixed-methods approach that combines a global benchmark of existing carbon credit platforms, a survey of rice farmers, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, and participatory workshops, to identify what makes a territorial carbon credit scheme viable, credible, and accepted by local actors. The expected outputs include a diagnostic framework of barriers and enabling conditions, and a conceptual design model for a territorial environmental credit platform replicable in other Mediterranean rice contexts.
