English
Manual content analysis of ~50 outlets in five food-important countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, UK, USA) on COP28 coverage of the food-climate nexus. Only 6% of COP28 coverage discussed food in depth; meat/livestock defenders (trade groups, politicians) were as prominent as reform advocates (NGOs, agencies). Few articles noted food-industry lobbyists' presence.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Food systems account for 21-37% of global GHG emissions yet remain marginal in climate discourse; this study quantifies media neglect and the balance of pro-reform vs. incumbent voices, relevant to how disclosure debates (Scope 3, FLAG) gain or lose public salience around COP/ISSB processes.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract The UN’s annual climate change negotiations, known as the Conference of Parties (COPs), are crucial venues for raising awareness and advancing international dialogue on climate challenges. Mainstream media play a key role in shaping how the public and policymakers understand them. At COP28 in Dubai (2023), food systems - responsible for 21%-37% of total global greenhouse gas emissions – received unprecedented attention, despite their traditional neglect in the climate discourse. This study used manual content analysis to assess how around 50 news outlets across five countries where the agricultural export or food sector are particularly important to their economies (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, the UK, and the USA) covered the link between food, diet, and climate change during COP28. We find that media coverage of the food-climate nexus remained limited, as only 6% of all COP28 coverage discussed food in depth. Actors defending the meat and livestock sector – mainly trade groups and politicians – were as prominent as those calling for food system reform, such as NGOs and international agencies. The most common pro-reform argument emphasized the climate impact of food systems, while defenders of meat production highlighted environmental benefits, food security, and nutrition. Few articles mentioned the prominent presence of food industry lobbyists at the conference. Our findings suggest the need for further research into the obstacles to more frequent, thorough and critical reporting of the links between food systems and climate impacts.
