Agri-food cold chains are major GHG emitters due to energy-intensive refrigeration, transport, and packaging. This chapter reviews sustainable interventions—low-emission technologies, energy-efficient refrigeration, renewables, ITS route optimization, smart packaging, and IoT monitoring—and develops a fuzzy MCDM framework to evaluate them under uncertainty. It also assesses life-cycle emissions hotspots and real-world cases, highlighting environmental-economic trade-offs.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Cold chain decarbonization is increasingly relevant to Scope 3 accounting and CSRD/ISSB disclosure for food and logistics firms. The fuzzy MCDM approach offers a decision-support tool for evaluating interventions where data is uncertain, complementing global transition finance and climate target-setting frameworks.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The agri-food cold chain plays a vital role in ensuring food safety, minimizing post-harvest losses, and maintaining the quality of perishable commodities from farm to fork. However, the cold-chain logistics sector has emerged as a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to energy-intensive refrigeration, inefficient transport, and poor infrastructure. As the demand for perishable goods increases alongside globalization and urbanization, mitigating the carbon footprint associated with refrigerated transportation, warehousing, and packaging becomes an urgent priority. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of sustainable interventions to reduce carbon emissions within agri-food cold chain logistics in terms of strategies, technologies, and policy frameworks through a holistic systems perspective. It explores the effect of the integration of low-emission technologies, energy-efficient refrigeration, renewable energy adoption, advanced vehicle route optimization through intelligent transportation systems, smart packaging, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for real-time temperature monitoring and resource efficiency. Furthermore, a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework is developed to systematically assess sustainable interventions under uncertainty and conflicting objectives. This approach enables decision-makers to account for vagueness and subjectivity in expert judgments, aligning environmental, economic, and operational criteria. The chapter also evaluates life cycle-based carbon emissions across different stages of cold chain logistics, highlighting critical emission hotspots and sustainability trade-offs. Several real-world case studies are thoroughly examined to illustrate best practices from diverse agro-climatic regions and the economic-environmental trade-offs inherent in decarbonizing cold chains. The findings underscore the transformative potential of hybrid decision- support systems in enabling resilient, energy-efficient, and low-carbon cold chains aligned with international climate objectives and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those concerning responsible consumption, climate action, and sustainable agri-food systems.
