Structured review of 20 high-impact studies (2020–2025) on low-carbon building materials and LCA methods. SCMs and alternative binders cut GWP by up to 25%, geopolymers by 69–77%, and mass timber/CLT shows the lowest median whole-life embodied carbon (119 vs 185 kgCO2/m² for concrete, 228 for steel), though results hinge on biogenic carbon timing and end-of-life assumptions. Recycled and reversible assemblies can cut life-cycle impacts up to 65%, but methodological standardization gaps, supply bottlenecks, and fragmented databases block scale-up; dynamic/hybrid LCA plus ML material screening are proposed as the path to verifiable net-zero buildings.

In the global GX context
Directly informs Scope 3 category 1/2 accounting and whole-life carbon disclosure for the built environment under ISSB/CSRD and green building certification regimes. The call for dynamic, hybrid LCA and standardized databases speaks to the broader disclosure-infrastructure gap in embodied carbon reporting.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The urgent need to decarbonize the built environment has shifted academic and industrial attention toward the mitigation of upfront greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents a structured literature review of 20 high-impact peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025, evaluating the development, environmental performance, and life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies of low-carbon building materials. Synthesized findings demonstrate that cement reduction via supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and alternative binders remains the most practical path for concrete decarbonization, yielding up to 25% global warming potential reductions, while advanced geopolymer systems achieve 69% to 77% embodied carbon savings. Mass timber and cross-laminated timber (CLT) superstructure configurations exhibit the lowest median whole-life embodied carbon (119 kgCO2/m² compared to 185 kgCO2/m² for concrete and 228 kgCO2/m² for steel), although their net benefit is highly sensitive to biogenic carbon timing and end-of-life assumptions. Circular and recycled construction materials, including recycled aggregate concrete and reversible structural assemblies, can reduce life-cycle environmental impacts by up to 65%. However, widespread scalability is hindered by a lack of methodological standardization, supply chain bottlenecks, and database fragmentation. We conclude that transitioning from static, narrow-boundary assessments to dynamic and hybrid LCA frameworks, supported by machine learning material screening, is crucial to achieving verifiable net-zero carbon building delivery.
