Using 1990–2022 Spanish data, this study examines long-run links between GHG emissions and growth, transport modes (maritime, air, rail), renewables, and financial development via NARDL, VECM, FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR. Maritime transport consistently raises emissions, while renewables and maturing financial development significantly mitigate them. It recommends decarbonizing maritime transport, accelerating renewables, and steering finance toward green investment to meet Spain's carbon-neutrality targets.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Introduction The transport sector generates approximately 23.2% of Spain’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yet maritime, air and rail transport are usually assessed as a single aggregate. This study examines the long-run relationship between GHG emissions and economic growth, the transport sectors (maritime, air, rail), renewable energy and financial development in Spain over the period 1990–2022. Methods Annual data are used, and ADF, PP and KPSS tests confirm that all series are integrated of order one. The analysis begins with the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model. Because the short-run asymmetric effects prove statistically weak, the long-run coefficients are corroborated with the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS), Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) and Canonical Cointegrating Regression (CCR). Cointegration is confirmed by the bounds test (F = 11.635) and by the Johansen trace test, which indicates four cointegrating equations at the 5% level. Results Sectoral effects differ significantly. Maritime transport raises GHG emissions consistently across FMOLS, DOLS and CCR, whereas renewable energy use is confirmed as one of the most effective factors in reducing emissions. The maturation of financial development also exerts a significant mitigating effect. The long-run effects of air transport and GDP remain method-dependent and less robust, while rail transport shows no consistent significant effect. Diagnostic and stability tests indicate that the overall model is statistically robust and stable. Discussion In line with Spain’s carbon neutrality targets, policy should focus primarily on decarbonising maritime transport, accelerating the renewable energy transition and orienting the financial system in favour of green investments.
