The Régiolis Hybrid project replaced two of four powerpacks in a dual-mode train with high-power Li-ion batteries to recover braking energy and cut consumption by 20%. The train carried passengers for the first time in France, logging over 60,000 km; bench tests replaying operational data showed up to −25% CO2, −52% HC, −41% NOx. Biofuel performance and timetable reliability were also assessed.

In the global GX context
This paper provides rare real-world validation of battery-hybrid retrofits for rail, directly relevant to transport decarbonization pathways under ISSB/CSRD Scope 3 reporting. It demonstrates measurable CO2 and air pollutant reductions without compromising operational reliability, offering a template for fleet-level transition planning in the rail sector.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Régiolis Hybrid project involves modifying an existing dual-mode Régiolis train by replacing 2 of the 4 powerpacks with high-power lithium-ion batteries. The main aim of this project is to reduce energy consumption by 20% by recovering and exploiting electrical braking energy, previously dissipated as heat in the braking choppers. For the first time in France, a train equipped with Li-Ion batteries was able to carry passengers. Fitted with a datalogger that continuously sends all the necessary monitoring data, it then travelled more than 60,000 km, enabling a precise assessment of the overall performance. Environmental performance was measured by a test bench campaign to replay the data collected during commercial operation. This made it possible to assess the precise gain in CO2 emissions and pollutants without bias, and find up to −25% CO2, −52% HC, −41% CO, −41% NOx, −39% PM. Furthermore, performance with biofuels was also evaluated. Finally, reliability was studied from two angles: the ability to keep the timetable compared to the rest of the dual-mode trains fleet, but also by analyzing the new operating points of the remaining powerpacks to ensure that the usage profile doesn’t degrade the train reliability.
