This study designs and optimizes an integrated CO2 transport network moving ~1.85 Mtpa from six sour gas facilities in North Kuwait to a common EOR/storage site. Three concepts—dense-phase, gas-phase, and a hybrid gas-dense phase with centralized boosting—were compared via PIPESIM hydraulics and GERG-2008 thermodynamics. The hybrid concept cut CAPEX ~19% and energy ~20% versus dense-phase, offering a scalable framework for multi-emitter CCUS clusters.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The development of large-scale Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects requires safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation of captured CO2 from multiple emission sources to utilization or storage locations. This paper presents the development and optimization of an integrated CO2 transportation network for North Kuwait, designed to transport approximately 1.85 Mtpa of captured CO2 from six geographically dispersed sour gas processing facilities to a common injection location for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and geological storage. The study evaluates alternative transport concepts and identifies the most cost- and energy-efficient network architecture. Three transportation concepts were developed and assessed: (1) dense-phase transport with compression at each emitter, (2) gas-phase transport with final boosting at the injection location, and (3) a hybrid gas-dense phase concept utilizing centralized booster compression. Hydraulic simulations were performed using PIPESIM to determine pipeline sizing, pressure profiles, flow velocities, and turndown performance. CO2 thermodynamic behavior was modeled using the GERG-2008 equation of state to accurately predict density, compressibility, and phase behavior across the operating envelope. Compression, pumping, dehydration, and pipeline pressure rating requirements were optimized for each concept. The alternatives were compared using techno-economic criteria including CAPEX, energy demand, operability, reliability, HSSE considerations, and implementation complexity. Dense-phase transport demonstrated excellent hydraulic performance but required extensive compression infrastructure at each emitter, resulting in the highest capital cost and energy demand. Gas-phase transport reduced source-side compression requirements but required significantly larger pipeline diameters, reducing its overall economic attractiveness. The hybrid gas-dense phase concept combined gas-phase gathering with centralized compression to dense-phase conditions and downstream dense-phase pumping for final injection pressure. This approach minimized compression complexity at individual facilities while retaining the hydraulic advantages of dense-phase transmission. The selected concept achieved approximately 19% CAPEX reduction and 20% energy savings relative to the dense-phase alternative. The study demonstrates that centralized boosting combined with downstream dense-phase pumping can provide a cost- and energy-optimized solution for medium-distance, multi-emitter CO2 transportation networks. By integrating hydraulic modelling, GERG-2008 thermodynamic analysis, and techno-economic evaluation, the work provides a practical and scalable framework for future onshore CCUS developments in Kuwait, the GCC region, and other industrial clusters pursuing large-scale decarbonization initiatives.
