English

A three-population evolutionary game models thermal generators, renewable aggregators and large consumers in a stylized high-renewable Chinese provincial electricity-carbon market. Carbon pricing alone drives thermal cooperation near 1.0 but leaves renewables and consumers below 0.001; a 95 CNY/tCO2 price combined with coordination intensity 0.65 achieves full cooperation, cutting emissions from 170.53 to 131.31 Mt and curtailment from 3.586% to 0.466%. The authors conclude coordinated incentives, not price escalation, determine the low-carbon equilibrium.

In the global GX context

Speaks to the global debate on carbon pricing versus complementary coordination mechanisms (green premiums, demand-response rewards) in coupled electricity-carbon markets, relevant to transition-finance and market-design discussions under ISSB-era disclosure.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Coupled electricity-carbon markets require thermal generators, renewable aggregators, and large consumers to coordinate decisions that are individually costly but systemically beneficial. This paper develops a three-population evolutionary game for an anonymous high-renewable Chinese provincial market. The cooperative strategies are low-carbon thermal flexibility, coordinated renewable trading, and carbon-aware demand response; the regulator controls the carbon-price signal and a composite coordination intensity covering information sharing, green premiums, demand-response rewards, and coalition-surplus allocation. Replicator dynamics are solved from 30 randomized initial conditions for each policy scenario and over an 11 × 11 policy grid. Carbon pricing alone drives thermal cooperation to 0.9998 but leaves renewable and consumer cooperation below 0.001. In contrast, a $95\ \text{CNY/tCO}_{2}$ carbon price with coordination intensity 0.65 yields full cooperation in all runs, lowers annual emissions from 170.53 to 131.31 Mt, reduces renewable curtailment from 3.586% to 0.466%, and raises daily social welfare from 79.56 to 99.96 million CNY. A unilateral $130\ \text{CNY/tCO}_{2}$ case achieves full cooperation in only 3.3% of runs. The results show that coordinated incentives, rather than carbon-price escalation alone, determine the low-carbon equilibrium. The numerical magnitudes are scenario outputs from disclosed stylized coefficients, not empirically calibrated forecasts or policy prescriptions.
