English

This study integrates Liquid Air Energy Storage into the LNG value chain, using Aspen simulations, cost assessment, and CO2 estimates. Two greenfield configurations reach round-trip efficiencies above 52% and 57%, beating standalone LAES (~50%). While electricity costs still exceed Italian day-ahead prices, the setups can cut CO2 up to 70%, host DAC at marginal cost, and supply residual cold for data-center cooling.

📄 Abstract(原文)

As the global energy transition accelerates, large-scale energy storage is becoming essential for grid stability, particularly with rising renewable penetration. Traditional solutions such as batteries or pumped hydro face limits in scalability or site dependence, prompting interest in alternatives. This paper investigates the integration of Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) into the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) value chain to enhance efficiency and decarbonization in large-scale facilities. The study combines Aspen® simulations, high-level cost assessment, and CO2 emission estimates. Two greenfield configurations were evaluated. The first replaces conventional vaporizers with a LAES system that both supplies thermal duty for LNG vaporization and recovers energy within the storage cycle, achieving a Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE) above 52%. The second, designed for maximum storage efficiency, retains traditional vaporizers and reaches over 57% RTE, outperforming the ∼50% typical of stand-alone LAES plants. Economically, combining photovoltaic plants and LAES results in electricity costs still higher than the Italian day-ahead price. At the same time, both configurations can cut CO2 emissions by up to 70%, can integrate Direct Air Capture (DAC) at marginal additional cost and can supply residual cold energy for data centers cooling purpose, which make the technology an advantageous pathway for future low-carbon industrial systems.
