English
This study presents a sodium-mediated aprotic electrochemical route that stepwise converts CO2 into solid carbon and O2. Operando Raman, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and ex situ analyses reveal a cascade: CO2 fixed as Na2CO3 during discharge, converted to Na2O and elemental carbon under inert atmosphere, then oxidized to evolve O2 on charging. The overall CO2-to-O2 conversion efficiency reaches 75.6%, offering a sustainable, economically attractive path to artificial carbon neutrality using abundant, low-cost sodium.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Globally, this work contributes to the CCUS and carbon-conversion literature by demonstrating permanent carbon fixation into solid carbon with simultaneous O2 evolution, moving beyond conventional capture-and-release. It aligns with international decarbonization pathways that seek economically viable CO2 utilization, though it remains at laboratory proof-of-concept stage.

📄 Abstract(原文)
ABSTRACT The rising atmospheric CO 2 level calls for carbon‐conversion strategies beyond conventional capture‐and‐release. Existing electrochemical CO 2 reduction mainly relies on proton‐coupled reactions and yields gaseous or liquid products, failing to achieve permanent carbon fixation. Here we present a sodium‐driven, aprotic electrochemical route that converts CO 2 stepwise into solid carbon and O 2 . By integrating operando Raman spectroscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and comprehensive ex situ structural analyses, we unravel a sequential reaction cascade within the integrated Na‐mediated aprotic electrochemical CO 2 splitting system: CO 2 is initially fixed as Na 2 CO 3 during discharge, subsequently converted into Na 2 O and elemental carbon under an inert atmosphere, and finally oxidized to evolve O 2 upon charging. Quantification of gas consumption and evolution yields an overall CO 2 ‑to‑O 2 conversion efficiency of 75.6%. By leveraging sodium's higher crustal abundance and lower cost than lithium, this work offers a more sustainable path toward artificial carbon neutrality and demonstrates an economically attractive, practical, and controllable strategy for converting CO 2 into O 2 , thereby promoting sustainable progress and the stewardship of natural systems.
