English

This study develops a systems-theory-based REAI model to examine household renewable energy adoption intention in rural Johor, Malaysia. Using PLS-SEM on survey data from 387 residents, it finds all five subsystems—policy, socioeconomic, technology, community, and finance—significantly drive adoption intention, with financial support and community engagement strongest (R²=0.682). Results highlight the need for integrated, community-centred policy frameworks.

In the global GX context

While focused on rural Malaysia, this study contributes to global energy transition scholarship by empirically validating a systems-theory framework for household adoption. It reinforces that financial mechanisms and community engagement are critical for just transition, offering lessons for other developing economies and for international climate finance discussions on distributed renewable deployment.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Despite Malaysia’s ambitious national energy transition targets, renewable energy adoption remains uneven in rural communities where systemic financial, technological, and institutional barriers persist. To address these multi-dimensional challenges, this study investigates the determinants of household-level renewable energy adoption intention in rural Malaysia by developing the Renewable Energy Adoption Intention (REAI) model, grounded in systems theory. The proposed framework conceptualises adoption intention as an emergent socio-technical process driven by five interacting subsystems: government policies and regulatory frameworks, socioeconomic factors, technological readiness, community engagement and social acceptance, and financial support mechanisms. Employing a cross-sectional quantitative research design, survey data were collected via stratified random sampling from 387 rural residents across five districts in Johor, Malaysia, and analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The empirical findings confirm that all five subsystems exert statistically significant positive effects on adoption intention. Among these, financial support mechanisms (β = 0.291, p < 0.001) and community engagement (β = 0.247, p < 0.001) emerged as the strongest predictors. Crucially, the REAI model demonstrates substantial explanatory power (R² = 0.682) and strong predictive relevance (Q² = 0.412), with individual predictor effect sizes (f²) ranging from small to medium (0.041 to 0.112), empirically confirming that rural adoption relies on simultaneous, system-wide development rather than a single dominant factor. This study contributes to the literature by extending systems theory to micro-level behavioural analysis in developing ASEAN economies, offering actionable policy implications for designing integrated, community-centred renewable energy financing and governance frameworks.
